Our services include the creation of both original and Diazo microfiche typically in 5 channel, 2 channel or Combination. Alternatively 16 or 35mm Microfilm and Aperture Cards may be delivered if this is your preference.

Aperture Cards

Aperture Cards are usually favoured for the microfilming of drawings. Each mount holds a single 35mm frame. Relevant detail is referenced on the mount, which might, for instance include the drawing number, issue and sheet number for future reference.

Alternatively, we provide Hollerith indexing code, which via a series of punched holes carries the index criteria in much the same way as a barcode. This facilitates easy referencing for future retrieval or duplication.

Aperture Cards

35mm Rollfilm

As with Aperture Cards, 35mm rollfilm is traditionally used for the capture of drawings. A single film of up to 30 meters in length and can contain as many as 500 individual frames.

16mm Rollfilm

16mm rollfilm is typically employed to capture documents. As with its 35mm counterpart it is also up to 30 metres in length, but capable of holding up to 2500 images. Files can be separated within the same roll by virtue of separator sheets to allow easy navigation.

Many of our clients prefer to receive their filmed images delivered by way of microfiche jackets.

Typically, we deliver these jackets in either 5 channel (60 images per jacket) where the filing is of a document only variety, or 2 channel (6 images per jacket) where the content is exclusively drawings.

Where a mixture of document types forms a project, these can be accommodated within a Combination Jacket (36 document images and 3 drawings)

Once original microfiche jackets have been created, Diazo copies are easily reproduced to the volumes you require.

Should your requirement be to extract data from Microfiche, Microfilm or Aperture Cards then BPMS have both the technology and experience to help with this too.

FAQ’s

Does BPMS still provide microfilm and microfiche services?

Yes. BPMS is among an increasingly small number of organisations still providing microfilm, microfiche and aperture card services. They remain widely used by museums, archaeological organisations and public records bodies that require an extremely long-term, stable archival format.

What microfiche formats does BPMS produce?

We create both original and Diazo microfiche, typically in 5-channel, 2-channel or combination formats – chosen based on your indexing requirements and the volume of documents being captured.

What are aperture cards and what are they used for?

Aperture cards are mounts that hold a single 35mm film frame, traditionally favoured for the microfilming of engineering drawings. The card mount carries reference detail such as drawing number, issue and sheet number – or alternatively a Hollerith index code (similar to a barcode) for rapid retrieval.

What is 35mm rollfilm used for?

35mm rollfilm is traditionally used for capturing technical drawings. A single roll can hold up to 30 metres of film, making it a highly compact way to archive large drawing sets.

Why would an organisation still choose microfilm over digital storage?

Microfilm has a proven archival lifespan of over 100 years when stored correctly, far exceeding any current digital storage medium. It’s also legally admissible, immune to cyber attacks, and doesn’t require ongoing software updates – which is why it remains the format of choice for permanent records in museums, archives and government bodies.

Can BPMS convert old microfilm or microfiche back to digital?

Yes. As well as creating new microfilm, microfiche and aperture cards, we offer conversion services to digitise existing microfilm holdings into modern formats such as PDF or TIFF – combining the long-term security of microfilm with the day-to-day accessibility of digital files.
